"Get up, man," Jason Bohn's college roommate said, kicking him in the leg a couple of times. Asleep on the floor, Bohn groaned, rolled over and told his roommate to go away.
"No," his friend said. "Get up. We've got to go to the golf course. Now."
This was nearly 20 years ago. Bohn had left Lewisburg, Pa., for the University of Alabama with the dream of becoming a professional golfer. It's a dream that eventually came true for Bohn, a seven-year veteran on tour who this week will defend his title at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans at the TPC Louisiana.
But on the morning of Nov. 1, 1992, the last thing Bohn felt like doing was hitting golf balls.
"The night before was Halloween," Bohn recalled. "I was 19 and we'd been to a bunch of costume parties. Alcohol was involved. All I wanted to do was sleep."
But he and his friends had signed up and paid for a fundraiser at the course. "It was an event to raise money to restore Jemison Mansion," Bohn said. "A home that burned in the Civil War."
A week earlier, Bohn had borrowed $10 for 10 chances to hit a golf ball into a 10-foot circle from 135 yards. For every ball he could hit into the circle, he'd get a shot the following weekend to participate in the semifinals of the contest.
“The High Definition Golf Simulator has been a great asset to my game. With it being the coldest winter I can remember, it has provided me the ability to keep my game sharp in the off-season. Tim Clark signs endorsement deal with Titleist
Several players have arrived on the island of Maui this week sporting new equipment deals. Jim Furyk and Camilo Villegas have joined TaylorMade; Tim Clark has become a full-line Titleist ambassador; U.S. Open winner Graeme McDowell is now a Srixon man. Others have made changes, too.
Clark has ended his relationship with Srixon and signed an endorsement contract with Titleist. Below is a list of the clubs that the winner of the 2010 Players Championship will be using in Hawaii at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions at the Kapalua Resort.
So which equipment company did Rocco Mediate sign with in the offseason?
“No club deals,” he announced outside the clubhouse at Kapalua. “Not looking for one. I turned them all down.”
In early October, Mediate was resigned to returning to Q-School to earn his 2011 PGA Tour card. Then lightning struck with a victory at the Frys.com Open and its accompanying two-year exemption, and Mediate, who turned 48 in December, now will be exempt all the way into his Champions Tour days.
“It got me a job for life,” he said.
He previously had a club deal with Callaway, but the two parties went different ways in the middle of last season. So why, like most, wouldn’t he pursue a club deal that would pay him six figures simply for playing a certain brand? He says he wants the freedom to play what’s best for him; he figures on any given Sunday, one or two shots could make up for the financial security he’s given up.
“I proved it last fall,” he said, referring to his victory at CordeValle in San Martin, Calif.
That’s not to say Mediate won’t be deriving at least some endorsement income this season. He did sign a ball/glove agreement with Titleist and has two new corporate sponsors added to his repertoire, both with connections to his native Pittsburgh. He’s wearing a Dick’s Sporting Goods hat (and appearing in commercials for the sporting goods retailer) and also is sporting the logo of Taggart, a Pennsylvania coal company, on his sleeve.

The Titleist CB 710 Forged irons are forged from 1025 carbon steel with V-grooves that conform to 2010 USGA and R&A rules. They feature cavity back heads for performance and forgiveness, along with the softer feel and consistency of traditional forged irons. The CB 710 Forged has slightly longer, constant blade lenghts with a softer top line for more confidence at address. Its cavity muscle produces more mass behind the sweet spot, and creates an increased MOI for more forgiveness on off-center hits.
There is no jarring feel on impact towards the heel and toe with the latter providing the most negative vibration – if you can even call it that. They were softer in feel than the 2010 AP2 iron that I tested them against with a more muted sound than that game improvement iron provided. Striking balls out of fairway, rough, and even divots was not really an issue in dry conditions but I had some concerns about how the narrow sole might perform in wet conditions.
I am more of a sweeper but with minimal roll on the leading edge I imagined there might be some digging going on when pressed into service on moist turf. That turned out not to be the case during my on-course time where I faced golf courses absolutely saturated by inches of rainfall. With the irons possessing grooves that conform to the 2010 Rules I did experience a couple shots from wet lies that flew further than expected.
I adjusted quickly having grown up with V grooves. There was plenty of spin to stop the ball out of most conditions, although I will say that the greens were soft enough to accept most shots. I will need further testing on dry, firm greens to judge their true stopping power. The stock clubs were fitted with Dynamic Golf S300 shafts, one of several options (see link to custom options below). The trajectory was comfortable for all clubs, not excessively high, even in the short irons.
These irons are out and out performers that upholds Titleist's serious clubs credo. The players cavity iron is one of the most highly competitive areas as golfers move from blades towards a cavity back that offers the same performance as a blade but with much higher levels of forgiveness. With the demand that this type of iron looks and feels as blade like as possible the bar is set very high and the 710 CB has met the challenge that Titleist set themselves by creating a classic looking iron with glorious performance.

Brendan Steele at the 2011 PGA Championship
PGA Champion Keegan Bradley and Brendan Steele shot a 13-under 59 in scramble play Sunday to become the first PGA Tour rookies to win the Franklin Templeton Shootout.
Bradley and Steele took control with an eagle by Steele on No. 14 and a birdie on No. 15, finishing at 32-under 184 for a three-stroke victory over two teams.
"We played well," Bradley said. "We got off to a slow start, kind of like we did all three days, but we played this last stretch of holes really well."
"That was a bonus," Steele said of the eagle.
On the next hole, Steele hit a 9-iron from 135 yards -- aiming at his wife, Anastasia, who was standing in the crowd behind the green -- to three feet.
"That was kind of where we couldn't really screw it up from there," Bradley said. "The shot was just spectacular."
Steele and Bradley birdied Nos. 8 and 9 to put a little distance between themselves and their playing partners, who parred both holes.
"They played really well together," said Price, who at 54 is a year older than Bradley (25) and Steele (28) combined. "They didn't make any mistakes."
Sabbatini and Vegas birdied five of the last seven holes to come out of a logjam and grab part of second.
Steele added: "We had so much fun that it made it a lot easier for us."
Bradley and Steele had been talking about playing in Greg Norman's event since the spring, and said they weren't at the three-format event to "goof off."
After sharing the lead with Champions Tour golfers Mark Calcavecchia and Nick Price following the first round of modified alternate shot, they were one ahead of them after Saturday's better-ball.
Bradley and Steele had a chance at the tournament record of 34 under, but parred No. 16 and 18 coming in. Bradley, the nephew of former LPGA Tour and World Golf Hall of Famer Pat Bradley, and Steele shared $750,000 from the $3-million purse.

Superb 710 CB
Headquartered in Fairhaven, Massachusetts Titleist’s mission is to serve the needs of the serious and recreational golfer. Titleist offers a full golf equipment product line including drivers, fairways, irons, Vokey wedges, utility irons and Scotty Cameron Putters. Titleist is also an extremely strong leader in the golf ball market. Titleist is well represented on the PGA TOUR as well as most international competitive tours. Titleist, along with Cobra, Pinnacle and FootJoy brands, together comprise Acushnet Company, which is an operating company of Fortune Brands.
It may have been the sleek chrome finish or the old-world styling but whatever the case, they drew attention from a wide spectrum of golfers. Before hitting the irons, like those many admirers, I had a strong appreciation for the look of these sticks. With a compact head shape, slight cavity enhanced with a solid weight pad, and slender soles they draw easy comparison to the classic Titleist blade irons of the past.
Titleist CB 710 Irons is very good looking set of irons. The head size and amount of offset clearly state that these are players clubs and all clubs look the business at address. The consistent sized heads look especially good in the short Titleist CB 710 Irons and also manage to make the long irons look approachable. One thing that others have commented on is the size of the number on the Titleist CB 710 Irons sole. Since it's on the sole it doesn't matter but while it makes it easier to see from a distance it doesn't seem to match the rest of the elegant look. The 1025 carbon steel has a high shine chrome finish which is top draw but I can't help but think how good they would have looked in a satin finish.
Titleist forgings are generally held to be firmer than Japanese forgings and that feels true here but the difference is minuscule. That's not to say the shot out of the sweet spot doesn't reward you with a gorgeous thrill as you feel the benefit of the soft carbon steel used in this forging. The feel in general is super solid and feels much closer to a blade than a typical cavity back. Mishits off the heel or low on the face are dealt with very well. Toe strikes are only slightly less well dealt with and one high offs the face produces a 'clack' that will surprise you but the perimeter weighting ensures that there is no real loss of distance in either case.

Long Titleist CB 710 Irons seem to have enough low mass to help me hit them as high as needed with ease. Playing knockdown shots in winds up to 30mph also resulted in very favorable results. Working the ball in either direction was also accomplished easily. I will say that these Titleist CB 710 Irons are best suited to better than average to expert ball strikers. The new AP2 is definitely more forgiving and helps the player to achieve a high trajectory even out of the worst situations. There is not much negative to say about these irons other than they have tough competition in the Titleist family with the new AP2. The better player will certainly appreciate them and they deliver perfectly in a number of areas. Average ball strikers would struggle with them and likely rate them a 7-8 at best but for the player looking for a refined iron that still provides some room for a miss-strike or two they are close to a 10. Golfers will find that these irons are softer in shape that the Titleist 695CB with a shorter blade and less progression in blade height from the heel to the toe. The toe is more rounded and the reduced offset in the new Titleist CB 710 Irons is very noticeable over the 695CB’s. Titleist got it right with these. It is possibly the best forged cavity back they have ever offered.

Long Titleist CB 710 Irons seem to have enough low mass to help me hit them as high as needed with ease. Playing knockdown shots in winds up to 30mph also resulted in very favorable results. Working the ball in either direction was also accomplished easily. I will say that these Titleist CB 710 Irons are best suited to better than average to expert ball strikers. The new AP2 is definitely more forgiving and helps the player to achieve a high trajectory even out of the worst situations. There is not much negative to say about these irons other than they have tough competition in the Titleist family with the new AP2. The better player will certainly appreciate them and they deliver perfectly in a number of areas. Average ball strikers would struggle with them and likely rate them a 7-8 at best but for the player looking for a refined iron that still provides some room for a miss-strike or two they are close to a 10. Golfers will find that these irons are softer in shape that the Titleist 695CB with a shorter blade and less progression in blade height from the heel to the toe. The toe is more rounded and the reduced offset in the new Titleist CB 710 Irons is very noticeable over the 695CB’s. Titleist got it right with these. It is possibly the best forged cavity back they have ever offered.
